Project No. 5 – Orphans in Xin Cai municipality, Ha Giang province in the north of Vietnam

Status September, 2023:

At the beginning of September, 2023, me (Isabelle Müller) and my Vietnamese team will meet all scholarship holders in Ha Giang and Hanoi. We will personally handover to them the scholarships and the according certificates for the school year 2023-2024. Some children are no longer in our program this year, either:

1) because their school performance is no longer sufficient to receive our scholarship, 2) because they are starting an apprenticeship (with financial support from the Vietnamese authorities) and/or have moved away, 3) because they want to quit school, 4 ) because they are taking a year off their studies to get better prepared for graduating or 5) because they have successfully graduated (like Ms. Đàm Thị Hương Giang, our first university graduate with High Distinction).

We always want to make sure that school performance remains as constant as possible and monitor how the children are developing year after year. We therefore ask our esteemed godparents for their understanding if their previous godchild (children) may (might) no longer be sponsored by us and that we give other candidates a chance to receive our support. A total of 15 students will receive a scholarship this year. Thank you very much to our supporters!:)

Status 2021:

Status January, 2021: Good news! The family with 5 full orphans that gets the support of LOAN Stiftung since March, 2019, has received personally at the beginning of the year further support handed over from our Vietnamese Team in Vietnam (Mrs. Bui Thu Huong and Mr. Tran Quang Phu): Warm blankets, new clothes and shoes, various alimentary products as well as their scholarships (financed through German sponsors). Together with their teachers, our team brought all to their hut (8 km one way, including mountain hiking…). With the scholarships, 2 children could afford an old bicycle. Soon, the eldest child will buy a better functioning, second-hand motorcycle. The children received an electric heater for their tiny hut, so that they will better endure the winter. We say thank you to the sponsors supporting this project!:)

Furthermore, further sponsors could be found for the children La Thi Nhu Hang, Dang Phuong Mai, Hoang Thi Ha and Ban Thi Huong.

On January 21st, 2021, our team member, Mr. Tran Quang Phu, handed over to both orphans Vang Mi Po and Vang Mi Hong in Xin Cai their sponsorships and useful materials for their daily lives. The children received new clothes, alimentary products and a heater for their home.

Status January and February, 2021: On January 28th, 2021 and on February 22nd, 2021 (a little bit later than planned, because due to some COVID19-restrictions we had to postpone the delivery dates several times) we could greet our students in Ha Giang city (some of them are orphans). Two students (half-orphans) could not attend (Ly Minh Hieu and Hoang Trung Hieu – father and mother received in their names the scholarships) because they were not allowed to leave the town due to COVID19-restrictions. The other children made it home on time for TET-festive days in Ha Giang and surroundings. The LOAN Stiftung Scholarships for Education could be handed over to all of them (school-year 2020-2021). The students received it with gratitude and big honor. We congratulate and wish them good health, good luck and much success!:)

Status Summer, 2021: In the meantime we have received messages from some of our scholarship holders. They are developing very well, despite the restrictions caused by Corona. This is the reason why there are delays in reporting, so that we will report further and in more detail at the beginning of October, 2021.

Status October, 2021: As school started in September 2021, we received over 500 applicants for the LOAN Foundation scholarship! Due to the large number of applications and based on experience, our admission criteria have become a little stricter in order to achieve even more promising results in the future.
We are now funding:
– the poorest children among the poor
– Children with a difficult family situation (half or full orphans or with relatives in need of health)
– Children with very good school results

Status December, 2021: On December 18th, 2021 our team (Mrs. Bui Thu Huong and Mr. Tran Quang Phu) met the orphan family (Hau Sao Thanh with his four younger siblings) in Minh Tan. First they received their scholarship money. Then they went together to do the necessary errands so that, among other things, the cold winter could be survived well. Warm clothes, household and care products, numerous groceries (salt, oil, 400 kg rice for a whole year, dried fish, (also) sweets :), etc …) were bought for all five children. Together with the teaching staff and volunteers, the heavy load was carried home to the children.

The children were radiating with happiness. They knew that they could only afford such a “luxury” with the help of the LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung). Our team member had to swallow some tears a few times. She kept to herself the deep joy of watching the positive development of these children year after year.

In addition, Hau Sao Thanh was able to buy a very good, used motorcycle with our financial support. This will make the life of this orphan family much easier. The development of the younger siblings in school is normal. All of them have good connections with the teaching staff and the other children. Hau Sao Thanh said before he went home with his siblings: “I don’t know how to express my thoughts because I have no chance to learn. I’m an ethnic boy. But I just want to say: Thank you very much for your help and timely care. My four siblings and I are now living very well, thanks to your support.”

Status 2020:

Status July, 2020: Because of Covid 19, we still could not fly to Vietnam this year, but we can continue our work from Germany as well. Our Vietnamese team can also look directly after “our children”. Our team visited accordingly the orphans of Xin Cai and Minh Tan. On some pictures, we are happy to see the children smile!:) Next to some pocket money, useful goods have been brought to them, for example rice, noodles, superposable sausages, oil, sugar, salt, shampoo, washing powder, facecloths, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and small toys. Now the children have summer holiday. At the beginning of the new school year, we will report anew.

Status August, 2020: In the middle of August 2020, we receive new pictures of Đàm Thị Hương Giang. The girl is doing well. She has achieved very good results at university. We are happy for her!:)

Status September, 2020: On September 14th, 2020 our team member, Mr. Tran Quang Phu, visits our two orphans Vang Mi Hong (8th grade) and Vang Mi Po (6th grade) at the secondary school in Xin Cai. Both received new school bags and school materials, as well as useful things (washing powder, tooth brush, tooth paste, etc…) and some pocket money. Unfortunately, the girl Già Thị Chở decided not to continue school. This is mainly due to covid. In that time, many schools were kept closed and the children appreciated the work in the fields in the fresh air more than learning at school. Though we regret her decision, we will keep on supporting the poorest children in difficulty and try to motivate them to get a good school degree.

From October, 2020 a total of 18 Orphans will be supported from us (Half- and full orphans). Please continue helping us in this task and become a sponsor:) Thank you!:)

Status October, 2020: At the beginning of the new school-year 2020-2021, further 10 new children will be supported by us, in supplement to our 8 orphans ((Vàng Mí Pó, Vàng Mí Hong, Hầu Sảo Thành, Hầu Sảo Chủ, Hầu Thị Súa, Hầu Thị Mua, Hầu Thị Vừ and Đàm Thị Hương Giang – all half- and full orphans). In giving them the “LOAN Stiftung Scholarship for Education”, we support the poorest children with good school results (Project No. 25). We do hope to find according sponsors for these children. Here their profile:

New orphans 2020 and sponsors needed for:

Status 2019:

Status March, 2019: On march 18th, 2019, a three person team of the LOAN Foundation team (LOAN Stiftung) (Isabelle Müller, Corinna Buchholz and Truc Pham) visited (at one’s own expense and not at the expense of the foundation) Xin Cai commune. On the way to Meo Vac district, our assistant (Mrs. Bui Thu Huong, DoFA Ha Giang) informs us about two orphans “making problems”.

The girl Lau Thi Gia wants to leave school for good after finishing the secondary school level (till now, she was the best student in her class). Since a week, she bunked off school in order to help her brother with the fieldwork.

The boy Vang Mi Tua left in secret his brother Vang Mi Po and his uncle, in order to go to China with other teenagers of his village. They hope for a better future, working as illegal manpower. Since the teachers missed him at school and visited his home, they were told what happened. The boy will probably never come back. The search of local authorities were unsuccessful. The young boy Vang Mi Po is sad since his brother disappeared.

On March 18th, we are on the spot. There is no hope that Vang Mi Tua will return yet. The LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) will therefore stop the financial support at the end of this school year (2019). We forward the gifts that were destined to him to the mother of Vang Mi Hong. She will do with them.

Concerning Lau Thi Gia: We get a call from the teacher that was sent to her in order to bring her to school during our visit. She wants to stay on the field where she is working with her brother. Mrs. Bui Thu Huong (with us at her side) speaks directly with her on the phone. The girl ist recalcitrant: School is no more fun for her. She prefers to start a family soon and be a farmer. That we are here to see her doesn’t make her care. She promises to go to school the next day – also to get her gifts…

We have to take a decision. It was planned to support her first until the end of the secondary school. But we have to accept her decision. The LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) will therefore stop her financial support at the end of this school year (2019). Concerning the gifts, because the LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) supports assiduity and children willing to learn, we decide to forward our gifts (first designated to her) to the best student of the secondary school of Xin Cai. It is a 14 years old girl.

So this time we meet only four orphans. Vang Mi Po is brave and tries his best to cope with the loss of his brother. Vang Mi Hong is doing well, also at school. Gia Thi Cho is also doing fine. Her school records are constant. Finally we meet Ha Mi Va that simply “forgot” our meeting today and that is late. He is doing fine and his school performance is good.

Better chances for education for a better future… We are sad that two children decided to end school, but we have to accept the situation. In the end there are so many children in the poorest regions of Vietnam that are hungry for education, only waiting for a chance. In the future we will focus more on them.

Status May, 2019: On May 10th, 2019 a two person team of the LOAN Foundation team (LOAN Stiftung) (Isabelle Müller and Corinna Buchholz) visit (at one’s own expense and not at the expense of the foundation) Xin Cai commune. We meet “our” Orphans. Gia Thi Cho and Vang Mi Hong are doing very well since our last visit. The boy Vang Mi Po is gradually doing better, physically and mentally. His joy is immense when we decide to walk with him back to his “home”. Some representatives of local authorities and teachers accompany us. We walk one and a half hour. To see the pitiful conditions under which the boy must live, shocks everybody (see pictures). In consultation with the authorities, we will try to ease the daily life of this good student and let him stay at the boarding house, closer to school. The long way to school (2 hours walk) will be spared for this tiny boy. The boy Ha Mi Va did obviously skipp our meeting. We will take him to task during our next visit next Autumn 2019 and decide accordingly if his sponsoring will be continued or not. Furthermore we met 3 assiduous students. Their good efforts have been rewarded.

On May, 2019, after our visit to a High School in Ha Giang city, our team heard about the fate of a student going to “Ha Giang Gifted High School”. Future high-school-graduates will soon have to pass the admission exam for university. But only 60% of them will be able to go to university. The remaining 40% will not afford it and will have to give up the dream of an academic career forever. The girl named Đàm Thị Hương Giang, born on July 31st, 2001 in Bac Quang district (Ha Giang province) is a gifted student that has already received several prizes in the past few years. She belongs to the Kinh minority and comes from poor conditions. She has a touching fate: She lost her mother at the age of 14 and her father at the age of 16. Her uncle housed her younger sister since then. Not her. Because Đàm Thị Hương Giang insisted to go to High School and was actually admitted at the Ha Giang Gifted High School for Talented Students, her relatives refused to raise her up and support her in this matter. The young sister of some fathers friend finally housed her in order for her to continue school. But this family with own children is poor as well. Their money will only afford her to graduate from High School (Spring 2019).

Đàm Thị Hương Giang will presumably graduate from High School with distinction and would like to go to university. Without support, she will have to give up her dream of an academic career.

7. Đàm Thị Hương Giang (Sponsor already found)
18 years old (female), born on July 31st, 200

The LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) decides to help Đàm Thị Hương Giang. For the upcoming school-year 2019-2020 this high-school-graduate will receive the “LOAN Stiftung Education Scholarship” after having passed successfully the admission exam at university.

The rules: The financial support of the LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) will amount minimum USD 300,00 per semester (admission fee of the university per semester) and maximum USD 850,00 per semester (admission fee of the university and – partly or fully – the accommodation costs per semester). After each semester and until the end of the studies, the scholarship will be continued after revision of the situation of the students and according to the grades achieved. Each scholarship student should write a letter of commitment expressing the will to study arduously. If a scholarship students quits voluntary or in case of abuse, the scholarship student commits him/herself to pay back the scholarship already received.

Concerning Dam Thi Huong Giang we are confident that she will perfectly fulfill all requirements. Because she is a complete orphan without any support, she will receive the full amount of the “LOAN Stiftung Education Scholarship” until she finishes her studies.

Costs per Semester: USD 850,00 (or approx. € 795,00)

Costs per Year: USD 1.700,00 (or approx.. € 1.590,00)

Status October, 2019: +++Update+++ Concerning the orphan Đàm Thị Hương Giang, we received wonderful news on October 1st, 2019: The university exonerated her from the tuition fees for her whole studies!:) We are very happy about this humanitarian gesture!:) Our yearly financial is therefore reduced and will amount € 800,00.

Status June 2019

During our last visit to Minh Tan (District Vi Xuyen, Province Ha Giang) on March 2019 we asked which children have the longest way to school. There was a girl named Hầu Thị Súafrom the 5th grade, that walked 8 kilometers (one way) everyday from her small hamlet Tân Sơn. The girl seemed to be very sad, so we asked about her and her familial situation. Her father died 2015. Right after this happened, her mother left to China, leaving her, her 3 brothers and 2 sisters alone. The eldest son,Hầu Sảo Chỉn, born July 10th, 2001, together with his younger brother Hầu Sảo Thành, born on 1st. January, 2002, took care since then of the youngest brother and the 3 sisters.Hầu Sảo Thành quit going to school after the 5th grade in order to help his family. As the elder brother commited suicide on 26th December, 2018, the whole burden fell on Hầu Sảo Thành. Since then, the 17 years old boy sacrifices his future in order to feed and take care of his family, occasionally working as a lease worker. Unpretentious about himself, in case someone would bring some relief in this life, he could one day complete a formation. The LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) will support these five children and look immediately for godmothers/godfathers:

Status September, 2019: Together with the DoFA Ha Giang we calculated the financial, existential basis of all orphans anew. We always paid attention and surely will do so in the future that all orphans do not have any deficits, in order to live a worthy childhood under better living and learning conditions. The new yearly support was lowered to € 420,00. Furthermore, the orphan Ha Mi Va was excluded from our program. The boy is not interested in school anymore and obviously did not show up to the appointment with our delegates (at school start on September, 2019).

Status October/November 2019: Our Team visited on October 30th, 2019 our three Orphans in Xin Cai (Vàng Mí Hong, Già Thị Chở and Vàng Mí Pó). We brought them useful goods for the new school-year 2019-2020. The children do good and they were very happy to see us again!:) A few days before, on October 27th, 2019, we met our orphan Đàm Thị Hương Giang in Hanoi. There we handed over to her the LOAN Stiftung Award for Education 2019-2020. On November 2nd, 2019 we visited our five new orphans at home (Hầu Sảo Thành, Hầu Sảo Chủ, Hầu Thị Súa, Hầu Thị Mua und Hầu Thị Vừ). We walked the long, steep and dangerous path that they use daily in order to go to the kindergarten or to school. One way takes more than 2 hours. The eldest son (Hầu Sảo Thành) carries its youngest sister daily up and down to enable her to go to the kindergarten. We brought the children i.a. warm clothes. The eldest son received from us financial help for the coming year. The teachers received the remaining scholarships for the other 4 children and will manage this money for them (for clothes, food, school materials, etc…). The children are very happy and thankful that someone is thinking of them and now taking care of them.

Status 2018:

Status May, 2018: Our Team visits again the district of Meo Vac in the north of Vietnam. At this occasion we go to see “our” orphans in Xin Cai. We have brought some little gifts for them. During a common lunch (organized by our Vietnamese partners) we ask them if a common picture with all of us together would make them happy. Their answer: “Yes, then we would put the picture over our bed with the feeling that we have a real family”. Now we know what we will bring to them next time…:) We keep in touch and are looking forward to see them again this Autumn!:)

Status September 2018: On September 5th, 2018 school started. While Ha Mi Va and Vang Mi Po are still going to the primary school in Xin Cai, Vang Mi Hong and Vang Mi Tua go now to high school. The LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) paid as agreed and on time the scholarships for the 6 orphans. As school started, wonderful “supply packages” from the LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) were handed over to them.

Status October 2018On October 6th, 2018 a two person team of the LOAN Foundation team (LOAN Stiftung) (Isabelle Müller and Corinna Buchholz) visited (at one’s own expense and not at the expense of the foundation) Xin Cai commune. We meet “our” 6 orphans again and spend over two hours together with them. They all grew significantly and make good progresses at school.

Status 2017:

Status January, 2017: First financial support is given to the orphans. All five children are developing and integrating well in their school. A short video clip shows them in their everyday life.

In January 2017 we learned of the existence of another orphan thanks to some photos that had been taken there. His name is Vang Mi Tua; he is Vang Mi Po’s older brother. During our first on-site meetings in December 2015 and September 2016, only five children were ever mentioned. Therefore, the authorities didn’t dare to burden us with an additional child. Of course, the LOAN foundation (LOAN Stiftung) will also take care of Vang Mi Tua’s school education through a sponsorship. This way, the brave uncle with whom the two boys live is relieved and the children won’t have to worry. First financial aid was given to the grateful uncle for Vang Mi Tua. During our next visit in June 2017, we will sign the corresponding contract.

Status June, 2017: On June 22, 2017, after a long and quite adventurous drive, we met the 6 orphans in Sua Nhe Lu. The conditions of the road have clearly gotten worse. Heavy rains have severely damaged many roads (brave Lầu Thị Già and her brother traveled 8 hours that day to meet us!). All of the 6 orphans are looking good. They smiled at us when we met, knowing we want to help them. We brought them presents and material donations, which they very happily received.

The contract for the 6th child Vang Mi Tua was signed on-site on June 22, 2017. Starting in September 2017, his school education will also be financed by the LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) until he graduates.

In cooperation and in continuous contact with our Vietnamese partners, we will as always supervise and guide this project personally and on site. We will observe the development of the children to the best of our knowledge and transfer the necessary funds every year. Every quarter we will, among other things, report to the godmothers and godfathers on the wellbeing of the children and the progress of the project.

Status September, 2017: On September 16, 2017 a two person team of the LOAN Foundation team (LOAN Stiftung) (Isabelle Müller and Corinna Buchholz) visited (at one’s own expense and not at the expense of the foundation) Xin Cai commune. We meet “our” 6 orphans at the elementary school. Good news: the LOAN Foundation managed to find a sponsor who will finance the seven-year school education for Vang Mi Tua. Also the 6 children are much better than before. They make a good impression with their development. See the picture gallery below for more… 🙂

Status November, 2017: On November 25, 2017 the team of the LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) (Isabelle Müller, Rebecca Müller and Stephan Müller) travelled (at one’s own expense and not at the expense of the foundation) to Xin Cai, Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province, in the north of Vietnam. First we met the two girls who are now attending a secondary school. Their teacher, Mr Hoàng Ngọc Khánh, told us that both work diligently in school. At the moment, Lầu Thị Già even is top of the class. This is an excellent achievement, especially considering all the difficulties she has otherwise! Later we met the four boys at Xin Cai elementary school. Ha Mi Va and Vang Mi Tua love drawing. Vang Mi Po and Vàng Mí Hong are still shy, but observed what was happening and gave us the beautiful drawings they made for their godmothers/godfathers with a little smile. We are very happy to see how well the children are developing! 🙂

Status 2016:

Status September 2016: On September 13, 2016 the LOAN Foundation team (LOAN Stiftung) (Isabelle Müller, Gabi Siegloch and Corinna Buchholz) visited (at one’s own expense and not at the expense of the foundation) the village of Sua Nhe Lu, municipality of Xin Cai, Ha Giang province in the north of Vietnam. We had arranged that the 5 orphan children, some of them attending elementary school in Xin Cai, would be brought there.

Every child has a moving past. To help alleviate the suffering of these children, it is now possible to make donations and accompany them on their journey through life.
