Project No. 47 – YAGI

Our work for the LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) took me back to Vietnam at the beginning of September, 2024. From September 5th, 2024, just as school was starting, I experienced Super Typhoon YAGI during two days in Hanoi. It raged first on the coast, then in the capital and along the northern border to China.

Due to the dangerous situation (landslides, flash floods, flooding, etc…), my team and I only made it to Tuyen Quang province on September 9th, 2024. We turned back before Ha Giang province.

YAGI left only devastation in the northern regions: many people lost their belongings, hundreds – including children – lost their lives. Numerous schools and kindergartens were destroyed.

The LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) will contribute to the reconstruction of school facilities. As we maintain our focus on education and children, we are now collecting precise data from school facilities that need our help. We will soon determine which children and schools from which location will receive our support. As always, we will make a transparent list, check offers and determine and monitor the logistical implementation.

From now on we begin collecting donations for this purpose. Of course, we will report on the results at the end with precise information, pictures and videos.

Please support us in this new task! Every cent is welcome and will be used one-to-one for the children.

Status September 24th, 2024: We are in contact with different provinces and will (as of today) support the province of Lao Cai. We are still waiting for further information (name and address of school facilities, number of children, goods required). We will then get according offers and carry out the distribution.

Status October 6th, 2024: We have now received all relevant information from Lao Cai Province and have reviewed it. With our current budget, we
can help this province. We have therefore selected 5 school facilities where much of the equipment was destroyed by the flood and/or storm, including 1 kitchen that was badly damaged and that can be renovated though. Our goal is that teaching, cooking and playing can soon resume as normal.

In addition, 2 orphans will receive our financial support.

1) Mui sub-school belongs to the kindergarten of Yen Son (Bao Yen district). A total of 65 children, divided into 3 classes, attend the school facility, and 6 teachers work there.

Following equipment for children and teachers will now be purchased with our financial help: 6 fans, 3 vacuum flasks, 1 refrigerator with
freezer compartment, 1 cooker, 3 cupboards for storing dishes, 65 cups, 126 rubber mats, 1 meat grinder, 1 kettle, 1 go-kart and 2 chain balance
beams.

Total budget approx. USD 2.390,00

2) Seo Can Ho Subschool belongs to the kindergarten of Quan Ho Than (Si Ma Cai district). A total of 78 children, divided into 3 classes, attend
the school facility and 6 teachers work there.

Following equipment for children and teachers will now be purchased with our financial help: 3 towel racks, 1 scale, 1 television, 3 shoe
racks, 3 cupboards for storing dishes, 170 rubber mats, 1 meat grinder, 3 kettles, 1 hut with slide, 2 x 2-person spring rockers, 1 ladder, 2 car go-karts, 3 x 4-compartment lockers, 1 chain balance beam and 6 fans.

Total budget approx. USD 3.884,00

3) Viet Tien Kindergarten is located in the Bao Yen district. The kindergarten was founded in 2001 and consists of 8 classes in the main building and 2 separate buildings. A total of 148 children between the ages of 2 and 5 are taught there by 21 teachers.

It was the first time since 2001 that the kindergarten was hit by such a flood. The children stay in the kindergarten all day and also eat on site. The existing kitchen (built by the teachers themselves years ago) was badly damaged on the roof and in some corners.

Since the building structure is still in good condition, it can be repaired and renovated. Because classrooms have previously served as temporary canteens, there is now the opportunity to build an additional canteen.

The region is poor. Most people work as farmers or temporary workers. Typhoon Yagi completely destroyed many houses, but many of the locals have
volunteered to rebuild the kindergarten and save on (wage)- costs.

Much of the school and learning material was also destroyed and needs to be replaced. Following items for children and teachers are now being purchased with our financial help: 6 semi-industrial fans, 800 meters of cable, 12 Sino control panels, 300 meters of water hose, 3 computers, 1 ball house (with slide, ladder with handrail, 1000 to 2000 plastic balls), 2000 plastic balls 10 cm, 40 light bulbs, 2 industrial electric stoves 16 l, 1 refrigerator 120 l, 5 work tables 0.8 x 1.2 m, 1 medical scale, 1 printer Canon 2900, 74 sleeping mattresses and 2 Ferry wheels (MNNT3612).

In addition, there is the material for necessary repairs, the renovation of the kitchen and the construction of the canteen that needs to be procured: Stripping old kitchen walls, re-plastering and painting the old kitchen area, repairing student desks and other kitchen utensils, repairing wall cabinets, renovating and upgrading ceramic tiles, electrical wiring, ceramic tiles in the cooking area, building additional canteen, building dome frame, installing ceiling fans and lighting system.

Total budget approx. USD 22.000,00 to USD 24.000,00.

4) Hoa Lan Kindergarten in Phu Nuan commune (District Bao Thang). A total of 50 children, divided into 2 classes, attend the school facility
and 4 teachers work there.

The kindergarten was already in poor condition before Typhoon Yagi. After the storm, the building was so damaged that classes can no longer be held there. The “House of Ethnic Dao Culture” that is close now serves as a temporary kindergarten, but the basic equipment for normal classes is missing (this was partially damaged or is simply missing).

Following equipment for children and teachers is now being purchased with our financial help: 1 x 2-compartment refrigerator, 1 industrial rice cooker 5 to 5.4 liter capacity, 50 wool blankets 100 x 140, 2 televisions, 1 gas stove, 1 portable practice speaker, 2 thermos flasks, 2 fans.

Total budget approx. USD 2.500,00

5) Sa Pả sub-school belongs to the kindergarten in Sa Pả (Sa Pả city). A total of 85 children, divided into 3 classes, attend the school facility and 6 teachers work there.

After the storm, the building was so damaged that classes can no longer be held there. For safety reasons, the children are now being taught in temporary classrooms of the Suối Hồ sub-school in the kindergarten in Hàm Rồng. Much of the basic equipment was damaged or destroyed.

Following equipment for children and teachers is now being purchased with our financial help: 180 foam floor mats (2cm), 1 multifunctional meat grinder, 3 kettles, 1 playhouse with slide, 1 spring rocker for 2 people, 1 climbing ladder, 1 pedal car, 1 wobbly balance beam, 2 televisions and 1 x 2-compartment refrigerator.

Total budget approx. USD 3.913,00

6) In addition, one teacher in the kindergarten in Quan Ho Than lost his life when he fell from the roof during the flood. He leaves behind a widow with two young children. The mother is a simple worker.

A 10-year-old girl is in the 5th grade, her little brother is 5 years old and attends kindergarten. We will support both children with a onetime scholarship amounting € 600,00 each.

Total volume of Project No. 47: approx. USD 38.000,00 (approx. € 34.500,00)

Volume of donations until September 08th, 2024: € 11.855,00
