Project No. 40 – Construction of new classrooms for Na Tông primary and nursery schools in Điện Biên district (Northwest Vietnam)
Status June, 2022: On June 13th, 2022, a team of LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung// Isabelle and Stephan Müller) visited – on own expenses and not on the expenses of the foundation – the commune of Na Tông, Điện Biên district, Điện Biên province (Vietnam).
Điện Biên is a province in the Northwest region of Vietnam. It is bordered by Lai Châu to the Northeast, Son La to the Southeast, Pu´er City, Yunnan, China, to the Northwest and Phongsaly province in Laos to the West. The province covers an area of 9.541 square kilometers and has a population amounting approximatively 600.000,00 people. Điện Biên is subdivided into 10 districts.
Na Tông is a particularly difficult border commune of Điện Biên district to Laos. The population of the commune amounts about 4200 people. Most of them belong to Thái and H´Mong ethnic minorities. The main income of the people mainly comes from agriculture and animal livestock industry. 2/3 of the students come from poor households.

Na Tông 2 primary school and nursery schools are both located 20 kilometers far from the commune center. The commune is very remote. The terrain is difficult and at some places dangerous, especially during the rainy season. Many children from the surrounding villages must walk in general 8 to 14 kilometers to reach their school.
a) In the school-year 2021-2022, the primary school had 247 students and 12 classes. 9 classes are located in the center unit and 3 classes are located in villages units. In the center unit, there are 5 semi-stable classrooms, 4 iron-framed and metal-roofed classrooms and 1 temporary classroom (that should be replaced by a new building).
Looking towards the future, Na Tông commune is in need of following:
- 1 additional classroom (with brick walls, metal roof, tiled floor, iron-framed doors with glass) divided in 2 parts (about 85 square meters) for approximatively 25 students..
Overall funds needed for a): approx. USD 16.532,00
b) In the school-year 2021-2022, the nursery school had 217 students and 8 classes. 5 classes are located in the center unit and 3 classes are located in villages units. In the center unit, there are 3 semi-stable classrooms and 2 temporary iron-framed and metal-roofed classrooms.
Looking towards the future, Na Tông commune is in need of following:
- 1 additional classroom (with brick walls, metal roof, tiled floor, iron-framed doors with glass) divided in 2 parts (about 100 square meters) for approximatively 30 students.
Overall funds needed for b): approx. USD 23.238,00
Total amount of both projects a) and b) in the same commune: USD 39.770,00
As a turnover foundation, the LOAN Foundation (LOAN Stiftung) can provide help directly. We would like to carry out this project, but are dependent on every financial donation. We remain optimistic that we will be able to collect the necessary funds.
